Jungle Tours - Rainforest
Welcome to the Jungle – Harris Jungle Tours takes you on a
breathtaking journey of the rainforest reserve.
There are many trails one can choose from. We went on a trail called blue cooper, which
is accurately named due to the many blue cooper trees that are abundant in the
rainforest. The Blue copper trees
survived hurricane Flora in 1963. Harris
explained to us that the blue cooper trees have buttress roots, which anchors
firmly and deeply in the earth which gives the trees the ability to withstand
strong winds. He gave us the latin terminology and genus of the trees and birds.
The sweet melodies of the various birds filled the air as we
moved our way deeper into the trail. Some of the birds posed for photos such as
the blue-backed manakin, orange winged parrots and collared trogon. We were greeted by a variety of seedlings,
vines, ephiphytes and tress, such as devil’s wood which is known for its dark
colored wood.
The journey continued as we delve deeper and deeper, we saw
springs, and streams which converged to rivers which supply a variety of the creatures with a
natural source of clean water. The ecosystem
is a wonder to behold and a treasure for us to continue to preserve and educate
ourselves on the biodiversity the island of Tobago has to offer.
